Hello! I just received this painting that I won from an auction house. This is how it was described: Early 19th century. Untitled; Figures in a landscape Size: 18.5" x 23: Ocal/Framed: 25.5"30" Signed indistinctly lower centre Provenance: Collectin of Bev & Victor Fortinski, Calgary AB, (Old Courthouse Antiques, Hanna AB). There weren't many pics to go off in the listing. It has obviously been reframed and is now behind glass. I'm hoping you can help me to confirm that the painting looks to be that old and if you recognise the signature? It really does look quite privative, I didn't pay a huge amount so I'm not out a great loss if it's a repro or by an amateur of some sort. Thanks for any info!

I am very doubtful the work is "early 19th century." The girls' skirt lengths alone look 20th century to my eye. Given landscape (the volcanos), clothing (the male figure is wearing a straw hat with a guayabara or similar white jacket) and artist's surname (Rojo or Rajo something), I'd think Latin American. The textile it's painted on makes it look older than it is. IMHO.

    Charming painting.
The houses don't look very Latin American to me. They look more like some Filipino houses.
Those trees with the high crowns are seen in Indonesian mountain regions, so probably in the Philippines as well.

Maybe painted on old sack cloth? Gauguin did that sometimes, and it looks similar.

I could see those thatched roofed houses in Central America. But agree... A tropical, non-European scene.
