    Hello,

Thank you guys and gals as always with your help!

I purchased this fine little reverse painted on glass work.

The majority of Reverse painted images are not to great on the detail,
but this one struck me as quite good. (I rarely buy paintings on glass)

I do know one thing, the front glass was literally covered in smoke. Like someone had smoked a billion cigars in front of it (probably the reason I got the price I did for it at the estate auction) Once I cleaned it up, it really popped!

    Any help would be appreciated!
    Warm Regards,
    Jon IMG_4695.JPG IMG_4696.JPG IMG_4698.JPG IMG_4699.JPG

The painting looks old, but the font on the signature looks modern. Can you show a closeup of the woman's face?

I would say at the very least from the amount of dirt, it is vintage. It would take a good deal of smoking over the years to build up on it. But not sure about antique or not. IMG_4700.JPG

The colors and the frame make me think more 50s-60s ? but that just a guess.

The architecture seems fantasy. Too many styles juxtaposed in one village.

Yeah, I'm not sure if the frame is original to it or not. As it's got a bit of a gap, and the glass does not fit perfect into it. But I agree that the frame is def. not older than 1940.

Kinda looks like big ben in the background, with the towers near by. But again, def. fantastical with the pinks etc.

I see typical Dutch/Belgium stepped roof buildings, an English style castle, Russian-looking onion domes on a double church tower, and the white church tower looks like it has a spiral feature which I've seen in Denmark. I've never seen them all in one place before. Then you have a guy on a horse with what looks like a hunting horn. But, when painted on something, it's a sign for a post office in some places and it's also a military symbol, so I don't know why it would be painted on a lady's coach. Plus she's carrying a dwarf palm tree on her luggage while the coachman reads the newspaper instead of holding the reins. Very odd indeed.

What's even more odd in my opinion is that all of those things are 100% true you just said. AND it's well painted. Whoever painted it, whenever they painted it... sure had an imagination and some talent. lol They had another painted by the same fellow at the auction, of a soldier standing with a musket. However, it had a good amount of paint chipping and damage to the art. So I passed on it. Not sure what it sold for because I just left bids.

My parents chain smoked and it didn't take long for everything they owned to develop an awful nicotine glaze. Vintage could be 1950s to now.

Hi, the town in the background is Munich, the church is Frauenkirche, and the one with the white tower is in fact the town hall. The coach is a post coach, and the guy with the horn the postman. The scene is a bit strange, as it looks like 19th c, but the town hall was finished only in 1905. So likely it is a fantasy painting, for tourists, I guess.

Hmmmm, with your mentioning all that build-up of "smoke" on the glass (if the glass is original to the picture), it makes me wonder if perhaps it was in an eating establishment or bar/nightclub for a long(ish) time with lots of smokers.

Quite possibly! I'm not sure as it was at an auction.

I had to look up the Munich skyline. What a weird collection of buildings. And then there are the modern ones... hotel2.jpg

What is really odd is the guy on the carriage horse, no saddle, stirrups and the supposed coachman is reading a paper?

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Sort of a fantasy image, isn't it?

Is is not pure fantasy, the coachman is actually the one on the horse. It seems that there existed such post coaches, here an example from Bavaria, 1st half of the 19th century: https://www.flickr.com/photos/94791180@N06/13957549520/

Your link shows a saddle and sturrups and the rider holding the reins, OP's looks like he is sitting on a surcingle and there is no sturrup and thee reins are in front of the horse? Or I need new glasses ;):p
