Today I went to a flea market close to my place in France.
Nothing exciting but one ring caught my attention.
I believe it is a very old piece of something (brooch? ) reworked into a ring.
Haven't cleaned it yet, but the ring is 18 K gold. The upper old part is silver with péridots and tiny rose cut diamonds. Some stone missing.
Hallmarks are Owl / Swan. Swan stands in France for imported or unknown origin - so anyone has an idea what the upper part was ? and where it could come from ?

Ring is quite big and weight is 19 gr.

Part of a bracelet or necklace? It looks like half of a clasp. Kudos to whoever saved it and made it into something else!

The color looks off for peridot, were the stones tested?

The stones look more like unheated aquamarine than peridot.

I was thinking aquamarine a possibility. Agree, wrong color, as shown, for peridot.

they look in real quite green. will make pics under daylight and after cleaning.
Since then I did some examination with my loupe and at least one of the green stone is glass :) with bubbles inside . The diamonds do test positive and the ring part is positive for 18 K.

Thinking pale emeralds, they were often used in 18th century Portuguese jewelry, with tinted green foil to enhance the color:cyclops:
The element may have been a link of a necklace or bracelet:)
Nice find! Where is your place in France?

Jivvy the research is my favorite

Maybe a bar pin? Looks like a spot on each end that could have been where a pin was attached.

In other words, we would all consider beryl a possibility, if glass is ruled out. Another mineral that is often in this color range is tourmaline, but not sure how likely its use would have been at the time.

That would have been more than exciting to me. I love 18th century jewellery but rarely get the chance to buy it for a price my bank manager agrees with.

This is a real stunner. I think it could have been part of a necklace.
I don't much like the chunky modern band, but I am very glad someone thought enough of this beauty to re-purpose it, and I understand the reasoning behind the threefold support of an 18th century piece.

The pale green stones could be chrysoberyl, highly popular in the 18th century. The colour ranges from pale yellow to darkish green, and everything in between.
When gemstones were lost they were often replaced with glass stones.
I think you'll find that only the diamonds are set in silver, which is done to enhance the white of the diamonds. The pale green stones look set in gold, which is what I would expect. Parts of the back seem to be rose gold.
One of my favourite quotes: "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn".:playful:

A pair of my 18th century earrings to show that silver was used to enhance the (teeny) diamonds, but the parts that were not close to the diamonds are gold.
You can see that the connecting rings are gold. The gold hooks are replacements, but the broken originals were also gold.

I really love your earrings !

I was really excited about this find as the rest of the flea market was zero.

It's very rare to find these kind of pieces abandonned on a table - first time for me.

Happily it was transformed as this is was made me buy it : the two parts just did not match together, the upper part was so tarnished and the band was so shiny - just got it for the price of costume jewelry. People who sold it did not say anything about it, I believe they did not know the history behind, neither that it was gold.

More pics once cleaning is complete :)

Really looking forward.:) But be careful, as kyra said there could be foil behind some of the stones. If any water gets behind the stones, they could become dull.

    Ok, done.
You are the best : no péridots for sure - the only stone that had this olivine colour is actually the glass one with bubbles. I took a pic with a peridot ring to convince myself :) Can't take one with an emerald as I don't have one :)

Absolutely beautiful, Daisy, it is so good to see an antique jewel clean and sparkling.
And emeralds are the likely suspects.;) And I bet that is rose gold on the back.
