It looks like a Caucasian Kazak to me, but I'm certainly not an expert.

If the brown and gold area closest to us is the underside, then it doesn't look machine made, IMHO. But from the strange way they've bunched up the fringe, the very wide white area from which the fringe emerges, the low pile (almost flatweave? but not as flat as a kilim) and the apparently low knotcount, I'm not sure what to make of it.

I agree with "too clean" and "looks new."

Thanks All,for your answers....I took the picture with a flash & cannot wait to see it unfolded & how the inner surface looks (new/clean??)...It is for sure,a hand a made rug...The colors are bright...I was hoping that from this small picture, someone could determine its origin??

I would agree with you. But I too am no expert. I have a small approx. 3x2' Kazak mat that I had ID'd by a prominent oriental rug dealer in my area, probably 20 years ago. I was offered, at that time, around $300 for it, and it has a 12" split down the middle. I think the market for oriental rugs has changed greatly, and would not expect to get any where near that amount today. It has been on my floor ever since, and I still do like it.

I have no clue as to what you should pay for that particular one......but perhaps you could google Kazak and see what comes up.

If you like it to use in your own home, it's up to you how much to pay. Reselling is something else again, as you know.

    Good luck in your decision.

Looking back at your picture again, that fringe is certainly suspect.

I know NOTHING about these sort of rugs.....but I can say that back when I was a kidlet, when we "moved" for the summer and the rugs were rolled for storage Ma had one of the local kids in to tye up the fringe like that to keep it from tangling while being moved. It was only tied on the outer end, not both ends. Maybe this is how this one was shipped?

Or maybe everyone knows that and I missed that observation?????????????
