It's a statue but it appears to be cast rather than sculpted. Is it indeed metal?

sorry, what I meant was if anyone can ID the sculpture this cast piece is based on. I'm not sure what it is, was sent the picture by someone who doesn't know so I was thinking I might be able to figure it out by finding another one online if it is a production piece...or if I can't then I'll have to go see it in person.

The strange eyes make me think of Homer, but I don’t really know. What thinketh thou, @Bronwen?

With that hair and beard, I'd say GREEK, not Roman...

I thinketh these historical figures all look alike to me. The verdigris in the eye sockets is probably all that makes the eyes look strange; he doesn't particularly look like Homer. Poets & philosophers are by convention indicated by a fillet round the head. This guy may have been holding something that would give a clue to his identity. Where he is located may be helpful. Could be a Roman emperor; could be a Biblical patriarch. Marcus Aurelius doesn't quite seem to suit:

    Nor Hadrian:

There are just so many possibilities. I'm getting sort of a Moses feeling. But maybe it's just the verdigris in the eye sockets.

All the best Roman sculpture was copied from the Greek & much may have been executed by itinerant Greek artisans.

He looks like Plato to me.
It was just one of those days he forgot his fillet, rush to get to the sculptor in time etc. Happens to all of us.;)

Dear heavens, they really do. One or two has his own look, but basically it's bald/not bald.

Plus, the interweb be a little loosey-goosey with slappin' names on sculptures.

Plus, I think at least one of his eyes is a painted on eyeball. :cyclops:
