I picked this up yesterday. The cup has a hairline up the side but I still felt compelled to buy it at £7. I try to avoid damaged things nowadays but maybe there is still some value in it.

I'm always up for buying "scratch and dent" items if they are really sensational. But I hate when I'm bidding against someone who didn't see the damage. I never win those items. In the days of live auctions I would sometimes holler out the damage before the bidding started. But only if I really wanted it.

If I've counted the dots on the mark correctly, it's 1899. (1891 + 8 dots.) I think from a tea set. IIRC, the "W" means a set and the 4710 is the pattern number.

I tried counting the dots but I kept going cross eyed. I never knew the significance of the W before. I just thought it was a one off cabinet cup and saucer to be honest. Thanks for the info.

It was a straight purchase from a shop to be honest with you so no such tactics involved.
