    Hello,
I have an old chest with RRR RRR RRR carved into the bottom of it.
    Can anybody shed any light?
    Thank you!

I do apologise, it's my first post. Here is the full chest anyway. Hopefully it helps. Lock/catch is not original I don't think.

Welcome prossermother. At first I thought you were just posting a very angry thread: RRR RRR RRR.:playful:

People will want to see more pics, different sides, the inside, and also the lock mechanism and hinges.

Here are more images if helpful. Thanks so much. I think the original lock is long gone and the tray looks added at a later point. IMG_4750.JPG IMG_4746.JPG IMG_4750.JPG IMG_4749.JPG IMG_4748.JPG

Interesting box. My first guess would be railroad related.

Certainly looks that way, where the lock used to be has accumulated about as much dirt etc as the rest of the inside.
And you think the escutcheon on the outside isn't original?
That's three Rs taken care of.:)

If it it the RRR could be Rosevelt railway, their abbreviations were RRR. The railway was in Georgia.

The RRR looks like a sort of brand stamp, almost like cattle branding? Is there any evidence of burn mark with those initials?

Hi and WELCOME to ANTIQUERS, Prossermother!! Thanks for posting great pictures!! Just the kind we like!!! Sure looks like some kind of 'work' related box! Did I miss you giving us a size as it looks somewhat smallish?

Thank you, Sue, small size would make every difference in the world!
When my imagination is left to wander, I think it's a recipe box or old file box with those dove tailed joints! ;)

Nice thought @antidiem, But there's visible a place for a 'shelf' as well, so I wasn't thinking THAT small:happy::happy::happy::happy:!! I was thinking maybe like 24" or 27" wide x 12" or 14" high....just for a guess...like a mobile tool box of some sort......

That's a good guess too, Sue, at this point, we have no idea. @prossermother could you please post the dimensions?

Hello. Wow thanks for all the responses. I forgot to post a photo of the tray. My inkling is that the tray has been added later as the wood is lighter and doesn't feel the same, but I could be wrong.... Dimensions of box are 33x27x25.... IMG_4747.JPG

NB. It was used by an artist as a toolbox, but I have no idea whether that was it's original use.

No, it just has the RRR RRR RRR which has been engraved seemingly by hand, not branded...
