Rug... it was free! What can you tell me?

I've only gone to one garage sale this summer, not too many due to Covid. But did find a rug, for free!

All kids stuff at first glance, but got one small item. Then noticed this rug, great colors, looked vintage, I thought they were going to display things on it, but thought I'd check, "Are you selling that rug?" and owner says, "Oh, that's in the free pile."

Figured take it, ask questions later. It seems vintage possibly. It is wool, fairly heavy. It is clean but does have some condition issues which is why they were giving it away I guess, but has such a nice look and colors. Approx 8' x 5'. On one end they sadly duct taped one of the ends to make a even line when turned over. Fringe is gone, quarter sized hole under the duct taped end, and some white threads showing throughout. Still I'm not ruling it out for somewhere in the house possibly as I really like the pattern and colors.

What can you tell me? Does the condition mean too far gone? Thanks!

Can we see the underside? It looks like a flatweave of some kind, but they are often machine made - and without any fringe at all, I think that's what you have.

 

Thanks for taking a look. There is fringe... they duct taped the end which had some damage, so looks even but there is fringe under the duct tape. But the fringe is quite worn even on the other side. This could be machine made though.

The 2nd photo shows the rug back side up. Both sides are identical.

 

Here is a photo where you see both sides at the same time. That is the part (on the right) where they duct taped the end.

 

If it's wool and has some hole issues, just be careful about wool moths. I think I probably introduced wool moths into the house from one of the lovely old rugs I dragged home sometime and even though I packed up all the wool rugs, sweaters etc some years ago, can't get rid of all the moths yet.

 

Looks machine woven, using mid-eastern / tribal patterns.

 

OTOH you can't beat the price. I like the colors too.

Hardy little so and so's, arent they? I got an infestation years ago, and controlling them takes years. Spraying etc, most of them are not impressed. They don't just prefer wool either, they even like cotton and synthetic fabrics.

 

It's the truth! I think I found them six or seven years ago. I cleared the house of all my sweet oriental rugs, wool sweaters, wool hats, wool wall hangings, wool weavings, anything wool. Then I found I had to remove silk and other things too. I used steam on the wall to wall carpets and sprayed some areas with specific bug spray (hate the stuff) along with setting traps. Then vacuumed and vacuumed and vacuumed.

Still have them. Sometimes I think they're gone but as they seem cyclical, nope. I have Roombas (robot vacuums) that I run somewhere in the house daily. I then dump the dust bin into a clear bag and wait to see if anything hatches out over time. Yes, still have them.

I find them even in dust behind pictures etc. My brother and his wife had them at their last house and even though they tried to be very careful when they moved to a new house still managed to bring them along. Pesky wee things! And destructive!

Sorry for the sidetrack but it's well worth stopping them before they get in if you can.
