Russian silver jeweled cigarette case

  1. 2015-09-24 20.50.25.jpg Had a Russian jeweler interpret the words on the case but found no info :(

    It's really more important to see the marks on the case itself.

    It is pre-Soviet, if that helps. The letter i no longer exists in the Russian alphabet. It was eliminated as part of alphabet reform not long after the Bolsheviks took over.

    The case has A III on the front. And it has a crown at the top. Very likely to be related to Tsar Alexander III of Russia (1845-1894). I doubt that it belonged to him but more likely that it was somebody in his entourage. I found this badge that was awarded to some who served with him. The style is somewhat different but has some of the same elements.

    I hadn't heard of anything recent. Nicholas II and his family were found some time ago and were reinterred at the Ss. Peter and Paul Cathedral in the Peter and Paul Fortress area in St. Petersburg. Most of the Romanov tsars are buried there. I got to see it once, about 10 years ago when I visited St. Petersburg for the first and only time.
