Picked up some Russian silver at an estate sale recently. Owner had a pretty darn good collection that was pretty varied. A lot of nice silver being one part of the collection. This spoon has a crown engraved above the initials EM. I’m wondering if that means it belonged to a member of the royal family or just some fancy noble type? Looks like an 1848 Moscow assay. Can’t find the maker which looks like EC. Edit: maybe it is EJC not EM. 5C77272B-051C-44F5-9EA4-0CDF42734B70.jpeg 87EB513B-1C99-40C0-BAE2-2F67D101F342.jpeg 98D117E7-ED42-44DE-B17F-87D0DC772133.jpeg

A member of the aristocracy, but not a royal.
Aristocratic ranks differ from one country to another, but crown symbolism is somewhat similar and used for comparable ranks. Here in the Netherlands this particular crown would signify a hereditary knight. It is likely that the Russian rank was similar to that.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The letters are probably Е. М. There are two dots, one after each letter. Seems they would have included a third dot if there were three.

Also, if Cyrillic, there would not be a J in the lettering since that letter doesn't (and didn't) exist in Russian. And the middle letter would not be a T, either (that's what I thought it looked like if it were a separate letter). In Russian the capital T looks like T when typed .. But capital and lower-case T or t look very different when written in script.

Anyway, I think just two letters, and they are basically equivalent to the same letters we would see in English.

Great point. I saw EM. Someone recommended EJC to me and doubt set in.

Makes sense. Royal would be preferred but I figured unlikely. :)

If royal, I recon, the letters and also the crown would be much more sophisticated.
Here are some examples of Romanov monograms:
