This piece just came into the store today. I've been told it is a control for a Russian Tank. Does anyone know what it is, and when it would date to? Thanks! ... Dave

I do see what looks like a 1986 date on the back (middle picture in white).

The readout in the window looks like a compass, so maybe it is a gyrocompass or a repeater for same.

    Curious.
Everything does point to Russian, no question. AYM, 36B, 40 ru, etc.
But my curiosity is = why the AYM, locking and screwdriver, etc. imprinted in English?

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The АУМ are actually Cyrillic letters (transliterated as AUM in our alphabet). I don't know why the English language words are there. They are printed in different lettering. Perhaps parts of it were manufactured in an English-speaking country?

I thought the English words on the front were odd as well.

The knob in the first picture at lower left turns the display (the display does not rotate freely). The protrusion at center top is a screw-in light bulb assembly.

    The scale goes from 0, 2, 4 ... up to 56, 58, and back to 0.

I "think" the letters under the gauge are Cyrillic. Correct? If you google some of the letters, such as AYM, rrik=59 you are referred to "Russian" parts like transformer, etc.. As Figtree says, probably the front portion of the case was for English users and the rest of the pieces, screwed on, were for the Russian users.

Pic of Russian GPK-59 tank gyrocompass. If you transliterated the XYK-59 from the back of op's machine it probably becomes GPK-59. Note same names on both lower knobs on both units, and the same "Dutch building facade" shape as seen from front.

Units used in one below are "Soviet mils" of 6000 mils=360 degrees.

If it were WWII era the English would make sense; the US sent supplies to the Russians at one point, and if it were made here some English markings might have been on the cases they used.
