Hi I have this Toby jug since last week think its old maybe pre Victorian ,

It has it little cap what fits in the mouth of the Jug I believe its unusual to find this has its often missing so I'm worried it might be a repro has ceramics are not my thing ,

What makes me think its a old original one is the colour of cobate blue ,

And his pants being a sort of strange yellow ,

It Seems very bright in the pictures but there a bit more dull then shown in the pictures ,Also the graze seems very patchy,

And it only cost me £17.00 from a local auctioneers,

What has add to my worry it might be a repro ,

    Welcome to the forums!

I think I found a toby jug like yours. Nowwww I'm certainly not sure because your pics are nearly impossible for seeing details that are so necessary for IDing. The window light behind the jug makes the jug a blur. The light source needs to be in front of the jug. Really the only reason I think the one I found is identical to yours is by the smile showing his front teeth giving him a bucktooth look. The one I found is on an auction site. The top of the page says Antique Staffordshire. The description of the actual jug(s) says:

    "Toby Jugs Lot 1104

    "Sheppards Auction House
    www.sheppards.ie
    Date 28.6.16

    "Catalogue Description.
TWO TOBY JUGS S. Smith Longton, 1851 23 and 19 cm. high
    Estimate: 50-80 EUR"

The pic is of 2 toby jugs. Both have their legs crossed, which I believe the legs of yours are crossed also? One is large and the othe smaller. The larger one on the left looks like yours - 2nd pic down.

I found another that is said to have Sampson Smith 1851 on the bottom calling it "Cross-legged Squire." This one is on Pinterest. I went to the site where it is suppose to be but not there. The site has toby jug info. One of its pages has names of collectable toby jugs. One of the names is "Cross-legged Squire." As many can't get into Pinterest, I am including the pic and info

You're welcome. As I don't sell, I can't help you on a selling price. Hopefully someone well come along with help for you on value; however, without clearer pics that will be difficult to impossible. Good pics of the details and a pic of the bottom encourage viewers to help. Note the differences in the quality of your pics and the ones we found online.

BTW, "1851" found around the base of these doesn't mean that was when this was made. That date has something to do with the company history. I've now seen some of these that the sellers are dating to the late Victorian period. According to this very good pottery site on Sampson Smith's marks, the 1851 mark dates from 1851 to 1890.

It doesn't have any marks on it Susan but its a dead ringer for the one on the right in your first post,

And not interested in a selling price just wanted to know if people think I did well getting it for £17.00
