But I was wondering about the thick frame itself. Can it be 50’s or earlier? Artist surname.. Merk…teer? Or something like that? Frame size is 37X30cm? Thanks for any comments.

I thought it was a pastel at first, but I do see paint on the birds and the foam.

    I read Merksteiner.

If the name is indeed Merksteiner, his ancestors could have come from Merkstein, a former village that is now part of Herzogenrath, (currently) Germany.

I really like the painting as well. It's well executed and very restful.

It's certainly well suited to the frame.

Well it’s good to know it’s well executed (I wasn’t sure about the skill level of the artist) I honestly bought because of the frame. :)

The work is very assured. Artist achieved what he set out to do.

Think your artist may be S Marksteiner. Watercolour of North German landscape, mid centuary date listed on ebay and beleive signature is similar to yours.

Also a seascape painting by a H Marksteiner and a painting of a fisherman by a B Marksteiner so the first initial is the question. The seascape is signed in pencil so not really able to compare.IMO the first initial in the North German landscape would seem most similar to the first initial in your painting. But there is the possability that all three are by the same artist.Hopefully someone can decipher what the first initial is.

Many thanks for finding these examples. It’s interesting the differences/changes in the first initial and also the rest of the surname (lower case vs capital letters) The landscape panting also seems to have a date.Do you still think this is a ‘real’ artist and not maybe more mass produced decorative art? Also the frame of the fisherman looks to be the almost the same (which really
    makes me wonder more)

I don't think either of those are by the same hand as yours.

However it doesn’t seem to be your typical decorative art? I don’t know,it just’s a little strange to me..

Why don't you open up the back? It appears it can readily be done.

Maybe different artists painting and producing ‘commercial’ art under the Marksteiner name/banner. Or maybe the Marksteiner’s were just one big family of artists :)
