Please I really need some words of comfort to stop me from passing out…

So my very first post in this forum is about a gorgeous antique moonstone necklace converted from a bracelet… for some reason I took it to the jeweller who sold it to me to confirm it’s indeed gold, and it was confirmed after being test, which was completely handled by them…

This is what I just realized they’ve done to it… I mean this is really a crime. Why would a professional high end jeweller test jewelry like this… I know it’s much cheaper than their other stock but no… it does not deserve this…

In the worst case, if you have no XRF gun… don’t file that deep… and not on the setting of the main stone… pick a smaller one… even I myself won’t be that cruel…I fear more about the setting being too fragile than being ugly… another reason for it staying in my display case… and don’t think anyone could repair this…

I deleted these photos immediately after this post and locked this necklace away so I won’t be triggered again :dead:

    Paranoid people buying jewelry:

    1. Start doubting it being gold or not
    2. Test it thinking a tiny scratch won’t really devalue it
    3. Get positive results and happy for a few minutes
    4. Worry about that tiny scratch is not close enough to truth
    5. Do a deeper scratch and get positive results again
    6. Realize the piece is damaged than expected
    7. Get haunted for the rest of life

and it even feels worse when I’m not the one who sinned…

:arghh: That wasn't necessary, not at all!:(

Maybe a small consolation: Antique testing was often done like this, so this is not the only antique piece with a test scratch.
    No, it doesn't.
But please do wear it, it is so pretty.
Just think of it as an antique test mark.;) Say that to yourself every time you see it, and in time it will be an acceptable mark.
It is a small mark and the front is still beautiful. After all, that is what you see.:)

Thank you AJ :cat: Yes I have to say when I found more ridiculous test marks on beautiful pieces, I feel a bit relieved :p At least, mine survived, and there are so many that were not only damaged but completely destroyed and went to trash bin at last.

Beautiful things keep being trashed so we should be grateful to those we still have… after one or two centuries!

I agree this beauty deserves to shine outside the box, but it’s overall not in good condition- a few loose claws and this thinning setting… it must have experienced a lot through the ages! And with that fresh scar…

I did have a plan of sewing it onto a velvet ribbon so that it could be worn more safely: less abrasion and hitting, claws won’t get caught in fabric. It looks better when backed by dark velvet;)

I wonder if someone who actually understands old gems might polish that back. Lovely thing.

Unfortunately that someone is not me :( it’s too thin so don’t dare to do any polish. Polishing down the whole frame might enhance the look, but weaken the structure.

But maybe one day someone will be able to restore it and continue its glory for another hundred years;) so I will just leave it for this someone…

What a dumb thing that jeweler did! I recently visited mine. He's got a new shop and I asked if he could test gold--does he have xrf or thermo? And he said he could test it but it would be filling and we both agreed that wasn't necessary. They should have told you what they were doing and allowed you to make a decision on damage!!

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

    lovely necklace !
It should be loved and worn , often.
So , unless the stones are ready to fall out........enjoy the front and forget about the back...!

Well they said acid test and I thought it was just a scratch :wacky: and turned out… and that’s a rude work even for the standard of filing!
