IMG_5828.jpeg IMG_5829.jpeg IMG_5830.jpeg IMG_5832.jpeg IMG_5831.jpeg IMG_5833.jpeg IMG_5834.jpeg Hi all, found this nicely framed print copy titled:Segawa Tomisaburo ll and Nakamura Manyo for just over $2. Many examples on line, any way to date this print more accurately.
Framers information is all in Italian :). Thinking this woodblock print dates from the 70’s- 80’s ? Print size is about 38cm x25,5cm. Thanks for any comments

Toshusai Sharaku was woodblock artist only active for a short period 1794-1795. His prints are very cool

Maybe earlier, since the phone number is relatively short.

7 digits pre-1998 according to the internet. Sticker certainly looks 1970s-ish. Shop located in tourist area but a Japanese print would certainly make an odd souvenir of Rome.

Does the background shimmer? If so, this is an example of kirazuri, which uses micaceous ink. While the technique goes way back, I believe that some more modern prints have added it as a way to make the prints more luxe. Sometimes they were offered both ways at different prices. You might compare your print to some known early examples to see if they have the shimmering background as well. It is not a sure-fire way of dating but you might be able to rule out having an early print.

Given the modesty of the presentation (e.g. frame, mat), I would think decorative.

Thanks Brad,so kirazuri (that’s interesting) Yes the silver background has a slight shimmer,it looks a little thicker or almost ‘cut out’ like a bit of a 3D effect (not sure how to explain it) But it enhances the outline. I looked at some other examples claiming to be older that looks to have the same effect. I will have another look at other prints

Personally I think a modest wooden frame like this suits the print the best. I would like it less in a very elaborate fancy frame.

Japanese art was a hot decorative item in the 50s-70s, at least in the USA. I'm guessing it was hot in Europe too.
