Shell bouquet wall hanging

I found this neat wall hanging among my mom's things. I have no idea when or where she got it, but something about it says mid-20th century or earlier to me.

I think every bit of it other than the handle and green stuff in the back is composed of different types of shells. I guess the green stuff is there to hold it together and make it sturdy? Don't know what it's made of.

Any thoughts on the age or country of origin? Has anyone seen similar things? My googling didn't bring up anything helpful.

Oooo , I like that ! Very touristy , but well done . The shell thing was huge in the 50s - 60s . I love that its made with real shells .

 

Fifties sounds like a good possibility to me. It kind of makes me think of the '40s, too, but I don't know if this sort of thing was done then.

 

Could be earlier. These were being made in Italy, for example, and the Caribbean as tourist tschotkes in the 19th C.

If that is white plaster on the back, I would think later time period.
1930s -60s.

 

I'll have to take a closer look at the back to see what it's composition feels like.
