Should this vase have a lid? And why does my jug have holes? x

Got these yesterday as well xx
Think the vase should have a lid. It has a sort of lip inside ( I only noticed this when measuring it for here. Don't know why I didn't just look)
It's five inches down (13 cms) and three inches (8 cms) across the bottom.
    Small & cute xx

And why does this jug have holes in it?
How old would it be? ( It's 7 inches down, quite big (18 cms) and three across the base (8 cms)
    I love the *bamboo* handle!

    This says 1449 I think x

Thank you again! As ever xxx
Do you think, AJ, this vase is one of those new ones? When I see that crack-ly stuff I always think *new* xxx
( I just whack stuff into my bootying bag if it looks interesting and sort out when I get home, wouldn't at all give me the Shookness if it is new ) xx

Google Images shows this Brownhills jug with a lid, so it's a syrup, I guess.

It looks 20th century to me, but @Ce BCA knows much more about Japanese ceramics.

No, that's an original, c1890-1910. Left side probably 珠山 (Shuzan), not sure on the other side, but the characters can be read in different direction so it may be another reading. Can't parse out the characters yet not find a reference for the mark.

Jug would have had a pewter lid, often counterbalanced, used for water, milk etc. There are lots of designs of these moulded jugs through the 19th century.

THe jug wouldn't have been syrup here, we didn't do that. Hot water probably. Or perhaps milk.

Thank you my Mrs. B xxx

(I don't know quite why but I always associate jugs like this with milk. Intellectually I know anything could go into them and of course, does but I aways imagine them brimming with milk. We used to holiday in Pembroke on a farm and she sold us milk straight from the milk machine aka cow and went into a jug. Maybe that's why)

    Thank you everyone xxx
