    Sombrero = México.

    Sombrero is from sombre, shade or shadow. It is simply a hat to shade against the sun, and has never been confined to Mexico.
    Ecuadorian sombrero = Ecuador:

    Even women wear them in Ecuador:

    Both genders, Ecuador:

    Mexico, different models sombreros, all very different from the ones in the painting:

    You're right, of course, and I"m not the least bit surprised to be corrected by you -- no sarcasm intended -- because of your vast knowledge. To my eye, the sombreros looked as if they had flat rims. That would point to Mexico. Curved, yes, would point to the Andes. The peaks could be either México or Ecuador but given they're a range, rather stand alone volcanos, I would think Ecuador. Artist's name remains indecipherable (to me.)

    Funny, I always used to refer to what I know as a vast amount of useless knowledge. My useless knowledge does come in handy here.;)
    About national/regional costumes, I used to collect them, until I decided they took up too much space. I switched to regional/ethnic jewellery, just as much fun and much smaller.
    It all started when I was a little girl. My father was often away on business, but he always brought back those souvenir costume dolls for me. And gorgeous jewellery for my mother of course.

    No knowledge is useless. IMO.

    My guess is G. Trecottey. Just a wild guess though .. Joy.
