Still a fairly hopeless noob with jewelry - Victorian age or thereabouts? Also is the stone hematite? The stick pin itself is marked but I'm really having a time trying to make out what the mark is. I think it has a second mark on the pin too but having an even harder time with that one (almost worn off). It's just over an inch long total.

    Thanks again!

Part of the mark on the pin stem looks like 925 or 935 to me. Stone does look like hematite.

Age is... not a horrible amount; I'd guess more 1985 than 1885.

Have never seen that type of pin holder before. Is there a name and approximate age for it? Patd

I think not - need to look again with magnifier but there just seems to be some somewhat parallel lines.

    Polish it.
You might be able to read it better.

    Pretty brooch, Aaron.
I agree, 1970s-80s in Art Nouveau style, so not Art Nouveau period. They make a lot of similar jewellery in Poland. If it is Polish, the mark would look something like this:

The letter above the 925 denotes the city of assay. In the above mark it is W for Warsaw. Looks like yours could be a G, for Gdansk. If the bit on the right is the Polish girl, that is.;)

It strikes me as too solidly made for the 1960s or later. My first reaction to the design was that the overall shape of it had a Halley's comet look to it, but think it is meant to be more like a stylized flower, worn vertically:

The heft, the clever but primitive hinge & pin, the Arts & Crafts sensibility, the vertical pin if I'm right about that, make me think it is pre-WWII 20th century.

The mount does look like the Polish amber pieces, they were often in this foliage style mounting.

I'm wondering if this actually was set with Baltic amber. It does indeed look like many Polish silver settings. I think the simplicity of the clasp, et al, may be a red herring: some 70s and 80s Polish stuff isn't complex.

After everyone's input here...I'm wondering the same thing. Hematite seemed like an odd choice for what seems to be a floral design ...but amber wood look much more appropriate in this setting I think.

The stone also doesn't look big enough to me.

That's what I'm seeing the most of. Wire work similar to some Italian jewellery, sort of cannetille or mock.
