Featured Silver Plated Cigarette Case

Hello again! I'm going through family heirlooms, trying to identify pieces that I have little knowledge of. Any help would be appreciated, since Google provided little assistance. This antique piece my mom said was used to carry cigarettes? It has a hallmark that says Cross - London, with a lion on top. Also, has a number 83 on bottom and an 84 on the other side. Any thoughts?

 

That's the Mark Cross logo. An American company. Don't know association with London but company history likely to explain.

Referring to Gerald Murphy the owner (and famous for his association with F. Scott Fitzgerald):

"Under his watch, the company produced cigarette cases, jewelled evening bags and wallets, then manufactured in England."

This was post the economic crash of 1929.

The brand was recently relaunched. They are selling vintage Mark Cross items on their web site. You'll want to go to the Vintage link and see the "Silver Plate Portable Ashtray" that recently sold for $480.

Well, your item is MORE ornate than the Cross Ash Tray that brought $480, so one would think yours would bring more than that IF you were looking to sell it through Mark Cross!! A unique piece......
