Silver plated hinged box

Picked this up in Buxton today. I think it's a cigarette case. Looks like silver plate over brass maybe. Might even be another layer of something else under that. I'm sure I've seen the mark on the base before but I can't place it.

 

looks a bit like japanese antimony, with that high relief

i had one with a similar mark

Yes you're probably right. I think the yellow metal is accents on top of the silver layer.

 

Lots of these Japanese diamond-shaped marks on similar wares out there. Most can not be attributed to any particular maker.

 

Okay thanks. At least I can call it Japanese now.

 

The Chrysanthemums made me think Japanese before ever seeing the bottom.

 

Looks like some writing along the lower edge, outlined in RED, but Lord only knows just WHAT it says!!
