Featured Silver Spoon....DATE? PRODUCER?

Discussion in 'Silver' started by George Barnard, Dec 11, 2018.

  1. Hi Guys,

Looking for further information on the spoon in the photos. From what the internet has provided me with all I currently know is that it was made in the mid to late 1800's. I'm struggling to put a definitive date as I am not 100% sure I am reading the emblem right!

Lovely pattern both sides...the emblem from top to bottom reads as follows.

    TOP

    I
    13
    3 Rd J
    F

    BOTTOM

Any information such as producer or designer and a rough estimate on price would be greatly appreciated, I ask of price out of complete curiosity!

    Thanks,
    George

Welcome George! According to the codes on the design registration mark, the design for this spoon was registered on August 13, 1880. Of course that does not mean that's the date the spoon was made, but if someone here knows how to search the design registry by date and material class (and that is probable,) they might be able to find the design owner for you.

    Very unusual design!

  3. Hi Bakersgma! Thanks for your warm welcome!

If August 13, 1880 is not the date it was made, what does this stand for? I'm extremely knew to this so please bear with me...

    Thanks in advance!

That was the date on which the design on the spoon was registered under the English system in effect at the time. Like "patent" today. Registering the design meant that the rights to the design were protected from copying by another firm. The person or firm that registered the design might be actual maker or it could be that the design was then sold or assigned to another (with just compensation, of course.)

  14. I found this whilst doing some digging last night. Not sure this is the registration for the same design but I'll see what you guys think...?

John James and Samuel Sibbett have a fair few registered around this date and one on the exact date (13/8/1880) with a design description that sounds very similar.

Not sure what I can do, without hallmarks it would be silverplate, looks like you found the design registration, which reads that John James owned it, so he was likely the manufacturer, and appears Samuel Sibbett designed it - neither name is ringing a bell for me...

I found another one, being sold by another forum member. I don’t think I can put their ad here. I will private message it to you, so look for it. :)

It's a nice double-struck design, believe I like the back even more than the front...
