    I think it is a Jewish Mezuzah case perhaps.

    Beat me to it; I seem to be collecting them! I have one on my front door; the builder and original owners were Jewish.

    Haha! Fast...

    Yes, a mezuzah, which holds words of blessing and protection for the house written on a little scroll rolled up and popped inside. Traditionally nailed to the doorframe at the entrance to the house.

    I have the two from doors to a local synagogue; they decommissioned the place and took them off the doors. The scrolls were buried but the holders ended up with me.
