    Today's market finds.

Sterling silver watch-fob with 9ct gold cartouche.

Lovely deep hallmarks are for Birmingham, 1911. Silversmith is Morris Spiro, I believe.

This is all part of my dastardly plan to own a solid silver watch and chain. This is the first component! :)

    Oh, and here's the seal:

Chinese soapstone seal-blank which I picked up for $8. I've always wanted my own monogram seal, so I carved my initials into it. I already have a Chinese seal.

After about an hour's work with a pencil and chisel:

Not bad for a first attempt. My initials in a diamond. S.C.

    Hi,
Neat old watch fob, really nice. You did a good job on the Chinese seal. I have several including one with my initials done by Chinese carvers in China town in Manhattan. The carvings were only a dollar or two more than the seals. This was in the 70s.

Good score on the fob, and great job on the seal!

According to my research, the fobs are called medal fobs or fob-medals, due to the shape.

And yes, Chinese soapstone seals have been around for ages. You can see why - they're very easy to make.

I modified my seal a BIT. I carved the grooves deeper and added serifs, or tails, to the C, to make it easier to read. This is the final result:

I carved all the fine details with a sewing-machine needle. Now, it should give a good, clear impression when I use it to seal my letters!

Ever since I started selling things online (about a month ago), I send a handwritten wax-sealed letter with every parcel I post.

Well I doubt many other people do it, so it's something special at least. Hence the desire for my own seal.
