This was an inexpensive thrift purchase. Signed "Burnett" lower right, painting measures 5 x 7". I believe this to be by Caroline Burnett based on other works I'm seeing on Ebay. Not talking huge money here, but her pieces do seem to sell esp. if not overpriced.

But what about this "not for resale" stamp on the reverse. I'm not worried about reselling it, but does that suggest that this is something other than an original piece?

    All thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

say_it_slowly The worst prison is a closed heart

Is that on the back of the painting itself or just a backer board?

I think the canvas might be glued to the board. Is that possible? Canvas does not seem to be a separate from the board, but I don't have it taken apart.

I can't help on the "Not for Resale" stamp. The dome in the background is Le Basilique du Sacre Coeur de Montmartre (The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre) in Paris. There seems to be several, a lot, of these Paris street scenes by Burnett out there. According to the following website, it is speculated the so-called Caroline Burnett paintings are mass produced in China. Others speculated they were done by Paris art students looking for spending money from tourists.

Scroll down a little way to the section "Caroline Burnett?"

Looking at the sale of Burnett signed paintings, I saw some that hardly sold for $20.00 and others that sold for a couple of hundred. Here is one that the seller calls an antique and is asking $490.00!!! There must be a good 50 or more Burnett signed paintings of the Moulin Rouge windmill for sale on the Internet:

    Hi Susan,

Thanks for taking a look, and for the location of this scene. Super helpful because I may be listing for sale (even though the back says not to, lol.)

I also noticed the quantity and variety of what sells and not on Ebay attributed to this artist, took that into account when I paid $5 for the piece figuring it was a small gamble. Now looking at two matches that came up by searching "Burnett, Montmatre", a larger one sold for US $46, a UK auction, and there is one currently on Ebay France just listed. Each painting is a different scene of Montmatre, they are not exact copies.

I think it is a decent painting, not a great master for sure, but colorful and impressionistic with thick paint, reasonably done. I quickly scanned the website linked with the "speculations" about China, etc. The frame (stamped Taiwan) looks 60's or 70's and the whole thing seems original to the frame for better or worse, but certainly could have been some kind of art students cottage industry. Interesting to read the speculations.

I think the key might be just to list as "signed Burnett" as the UK seller did. It seems to have decorative value, even the frame is kind of cool in a Hollywood Regency way. Thanks!
