    Hello all

A local charity shop I help in had this set of drawers donated. I would like to know it's age and purpose.

Width and height are approx 30cm, depth around 45cm. The four drawers are completely removable.

Apologies for the awful photos, it's the best I could do in the cramped shop.

    Thanks for looking

From a sewing machine table most likely.

Agree drawers are from old sewing machines (late 1800's, early 1900's). Looks like a marriage of parts - the sewing machine drawers, plus a top tray that had the corners lopped off, and brackets on the sides screwed on to tie it all together.

Seems like back in the 80s or so they were popular to recycle into useful storage items.

I like it. It's got kind of an air of late Victorian whimsy about it, like Dumbledore would hide is spare wand in one of the drawers.

Looks more as though it's for index cards to me.

Yup, I have a set of old Singer sewing machine drawers like this hiding somewhere in my basement or garage. I also have the original top and the cast iron legs, also hiding, all of which we took apart at some point. Bought them in the early 1970s and used back then as a plant stand... that's when house plants really took off.

Me too, Pat. I have the whole setup in one piece. I had every intention of trying to revive it, then apathy set in like rigor mortis.

Thanks everyone. I went back to the shop armed with this knowledge today. When I got there I was told they found a note in one of the drawers which said: Singer Sewing Machine Drawers.

One way or another, I feel I have learned something.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

They could make some nice decorative drawers for storing something, after a little rehab.
