Am I correct in dating this piece 1841? (oval S. 41), reference Chaffers Marks & Monograms. Is it a vase, an urn, or something else? It measures 5 1/2" (14cm) high and 3" (7.6cm) diameter.

...I wouldn't assume that's a legit Severes mark, one of the most faked/copied marks... looks a bit off to me, but I'm an amateur. Nice looking little whatsit, whoever made it.

I agree there are lots of fakes, I also agree that it looks a little off, but the workmanship of the silver base looks well made

BTW the mark looked much better before I enlarged it and the color also chaged.

The silver frame has a French Minerva 950% mark.

OK, have no experience with a piece like this, sorry ..

One thing that did come to mind was that the cover was from another porcelain vase and that the metal section was an independent object ..a marriage?

I think this is a marriage.
I think the lid goes on something like this

I can't find anything with a metal base like what you have. Sevres is known for their porcelains.

Maybe a look for more marks on the sterling lattice will yield some information.

Wondering if the base is a toothpick or cigarette holder.
Not finding anything - Cigarette holder just brings up cases not table top.

If it is a marriage, it certainly seems to fit just about perfectly, how the porcelain lid fits just about perfectly right into the lip on the brass base.

All the Sevres pieces I've ever seen look to have been decorated so meticulously that God Himself would have a tough time finding fault with them. The lid here appears to have been done by an Afghan rug weaver.

After reading about all the issues pointed out, I agree that it's a marriage. Thank you, and have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving. Andy

Is this from the bottom of the metal base to the tip of the finial? Where exactly is it 3" in diameter? I sometimes take as a clue to point of origin whether something measures evenly in units of English or metric systems.

Yes, from the bottom of the metal base to the tip of the finial and the diameter is the widest part of the cover. The measurements rounded off.
