Featured Small Shuttle? Made From Abalone; What Craft & Age, Please?

    The word 'tatting' comes to mind, as I've seen this shape an' size over the years an' heard that usage for them...but really have no idea what tatting is. It may be made for lacework, but seems too large for that. It is similar to other, larger shuttles used in net-making, but they're usually for heavier cord. It's ~2 5/8" by ~13/16", ~7/16" thick. The spacer an' 2 rivets look to be silver; weight is ~8 grams. Any illumination an' all comments welcome; thanks for lookin'!

    Dang Whit-At first I thought that was some kind of old Pac NW NA gorget or charm stone type doohickey !
    Tis a beautiful piece of perhaps soon to be extinct(?) abalone though.
