    Hey All

I am new here and english is not my main language so i hope I will not make too many mistakes.

I found this wooden statue. Height is around 20cm. Shows some kind of creature with a long tongue. Could it be african? How old could it be and what kind of wood is it?

    Thank you for every hint.
    Cheers, Mithrur

    Welcome, Mithrur.

Your little carving is interesting and well done. Based on the style, I think it may be Indonesian or perhaps South Asian (southern India or Sri Lanka). I will "tag" another member here who is very knowledgeable about Indonesian things. It may take some time for her to respond, so please be patient.

This is a tough one. I found another photo from Mithrur, online. I used the following to search without luck.

Thats really interesting. Thank you so much. I was looking for any signs in the net for hours but did not find anything.

First I thought its looking a bit like Aswang but there are no wings...
Thank you again for all the effort

Maybe it's Rangda the Demon Queen of the Leyaks inBali. There are some similarities like the Teeth and the long Tongue

There are some similarities, but Rangda is a female character and is usually depicted with prominent breasts.

Your carving looks more like a monkey, but does not have the usual attributes of Hanuman, the monkey king featured in the Hindu epic Ramayana.

Close, it is a Leyak in its nocturnal manifestation, so a subject of Rangda. During daytime Leyaks look like normal human beings.
You rarely see Leyak carvings, which is no statement on the value.
Apologies for the late reply, I had brain fatigue for a while.

    Good Morning Any Jewelery
Thank you so much. I really wonder, how this was coming to my family.
Any Idea how old it could be?

    Thank you again

Good Morning, Mithrur, glad to have been of help.:)
Where was your family from? Did they ever travel to Asia, or have a friend who could have bought it there?
I don't think an unusual subject like this would have been exported.

It is possible that my grandfather brought the carving home on one of his many trips. But it would be new to me if he had been in Bali....

Family is from Switzerland by the way.

    Again thank you very much
    have a nice week, Mithrur
