Featured Snuff box stone

Hi

Does anyone know what the stone is in one of these snuff boxes I found today

I believe one is horn, but unsure about the stone in the metal one, Agate ?

Any idea of the age of both helpful as well

There's a thin crack in bottom of stone one which I believe someone has tried to reinforce with the green bottom

Any thoughts appreciated

 

Are you sure it isn't horn as well - it certainly looks like horn in the pics.

Yeah it's definitely stone, very cold and hard

 

It could be petrified wood, as komo suggested.

That would be right for petrified wood, the organic material is replaced with quartz/chalcedony so it would be hard & cold.

 

ill look into the petrified wood, as dont really know what it is, heres a coupla closer

 

now it looks even more like wood...

It is so old, we may never know. All we can do now is find a happy place for it.

 

yeah maybe theres a shelter somewhere for the petrified

where they can all get together and relax a bitty

You're right, it is pretty recent, but also pretty cute. It is a Chinese snuff bottle.

 

Nice glaze on it too, look up 'transmutation glaze', originals go back to the Kangxi period. The glaze became popular in the 1980's for reproductions.
