I am new to this site and to antiques so I know nothing but recently found this framed sign in an attic and cannot find any information on it. If anyone has an idea what year it might be from and if this is a rare find that would be great. Any info is appreciated. Thank you.

Hi & welcome :), you should add more pictures so that someone may be able to help. I can't tell what I'm looking at, it's very dark. Try more pics, overall picture, close-ups, the back, and any markings and/or wording?

Well, this SOCONY ad featuring the same image dyes to 1928. That doesn't mean yours does, of course. Could well be a reproduction. You didn't specify but I'm assuming paper. Did you examine it carefully for artist's signature, printer's bug etc.?

Ok I will add more pictures of the item. There are no markings or dates anywhere. From what I gathered online Socony Oil Company merged with Vacuum Oil in 1911. Most of the items ive seen in my search are labeled Socony-Vacuum. This one is labeled only Socony. Not sure if that means its from sometime before 1911. 20170610_171537-1-1-1-1.jpg

This is the backside of the poster. ^

Close up of the frame it came in.

Back side of the frame and the border used to mat the poster.

I apologize for the pics not being great. Used camera on phone to take these.

    Debora,

It looks as if it has a backing glued to it so I cant see if there is any signature on back. The paper is very thin almost like newspaper but where its peeling up slightly from the backing I can see nothing printed on the other side like a newspaper would be.

Im not sure what printers bug is.

Thank you for all your info!

According to the internet, merger was 1931. Don't see any reason why your piece wouldn't be contemporary (more or less) with ad which would place it 1928ish. (Someone who can date car model will come along to confirm or not.) Looks like it's been cropped. And has a grommet, no? Could it have been a calendar originally?

The gas pump itself is a major clue. That's a 1920s pump and earlier rather than later.

I'd say late 20s early 30s on the car.
When I get on my computer I'll show the cool little Socony Eskimo and igloo gas station give away set I have. :)
They became Exxon which became Exxon Mobil.
Think of the red Pegasus. :)

Hi and WELCOME, Callie!! Looking at the "SOCONY" wording across the bottom, the image seems to have surely been cropped, which would probably have also cut off the "bug" which is a tiny printed logo......like a union logo.......they are most always VERY tiny!! But, LOVE THE IMAGE!!!!!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

SOCONY was short for Standard Oil Co. of New York. It was formed in 1911 when the original "big" Standard Oil was determined by the U.S. Supreme Court to be in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act (basically, it was a huge corporation engaging in unfair business practices due to being much larger than its competition).

And SOCONY did merge with Vacuum in 1931. So what everybody is saying regarding this sign or poster being from the 1920s appears likely. As has been mentions already, Socony-Vacuum later became Mobil.

And thus oil and gas guys would be drooling over this, even with condition issues.
