A rummage in a neglected box of mixed ephemera in the shed produced these few items that may be of some interest. Item one of the lot is a cover, dated 1859 with a Charleston S.C.postmark on a 1 cent stamp.

Colour is a bit off in the picture, stamp is normal blue.

Next item is a city of Boston tax receipt dated 1825.

    P1040902-001.JPG

And some receipts from the Providence Railroad, 1838 and 1846

    P1040904-002.JPG

    P1040903-001.JPG

Usual rules, post free to anyone interested who's name I pick at random after a week, lets say next Monday.

I think you would be justified in withdrawing that letter if the following is true:

The letter may reference J.J. (John Julius) Pringle Smith (1816-94):
    http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=12445553

The son of Robert Smith and Elizabeth Pringle, he came from a prominent Charleston family and was educated at the College of Charleston. He studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1838, but focused his time primarily in planting and became very successful, and was also a signer of the Ordinance of Secession.

A namesake was responsible for the restoration of Middleton Place plantation. If the biography above is correct, it seems likely that the J.J. Pringle Smith named on the document married into the Middleton family. But that’s just conjecture.

According to Wikipedia, the stamp has a bit of history as well:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postage_stamps_and_postal_history_of_the_United_States

The full series included a 1¢ profile of Franklin in blue, a 3¢ profile of Washington in red brown, a 5¢ portrait of Thomas Jefferson, and portraits of Washington for 10¢ green and 12¢ black values. The 1¢ stamp achieved notoriety, at least among philatelists, because production problems (the stamp design was too tall for the space provided) led to a welter of plate modifications done in piecemeal fashion, and there are no fewer than seven major varieties, ranging in price from $100 to $200,000 (the latter for the only stamp of the 200 images on the first plate that displays the design's top and bottom ornamentation complete).

(I suspect the prices mentioned would refer to unused examples)

and was also a signer of the Ordinance of Secession.

Something of a Johnny Reb, then

I'll have no truck with seccesionists! But it stays in the bundle. It's only addressed to him, it's not as if it was an autograph.
