I wasn't sure if this was the correct forum for this. yeah after 7 years here i ask lol.
I picked up these three portraits this morning and was hoping to get some help as to what i purchased. The total cost for all three was $15.00 so no loss.
the first one is 12" x 18" has a slight dome or curved glass. Someone stuck gold tape on the back so ill have to probably remove it at some point.

This second one is 11" x 14 " with a deep dome curved glass. I don't know if the frame is original as the back is newer?

This last one I think is painted? 15" x 24" Again curved glass.
I can't make out the pencil writing on the back of this one. His name and i think when he died? Any and all help appreciated.

    Hi,
These are photographs or more "solar enlargements". They were photos that have been "painted" over.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

As Greg mentioned, they are all enlarged photos that have been colored and otherwise enhanced. This type of picture is often known as a solar enlargement. They were also known as crayon portraits, even when crayons were not used. Very popular from the mid-19th century until about the 1930s. The first one seems to be less painted, drawn over, or colored than most of the ones I've seen.

The first woman appears to be wearing leg o'mutton sleeves which would place the photograph in the 1890s. The second woman is wearing a babushka, which was part of traditional dress in many European country; that makes it difficult/impossible to date. I would think the man's photograph was early 20th century. If you haven't done so already, you should open the backs' up to see if there's additional information.

Thanks for the information Debora,I opened the ladies up lol. But with the brittle back on the man I couldn't do it. i thought he was a little older with that plaster frame. This frame came out great, Not sure of the wood. She must be Russian. these came from the Russian thrift.

Mikey, I think you might be RIGHT.....!!!!! Let me enhance what I "THINK" I'm seeing now with your suggestion of 'Ludwig' ....that really nails it I think!!
Sorry for my shaky hand this A.M.....and I only traced what little white I was seeing....compare it with above image!!!

@916Bulldogs123 , Debora's advice is good, as usual. Another factor is that a photo could be reproduced in this way years after the original photograph was taken, as long as a negative was retained. Sometimes they were contemporary with the original photo and sometimes not.

Thank you @Figtree3 and @Debora for the wonderful information.
And @Aquitaine for working on the writing. I am sure these will show a nice profit when i sell them.
