I am wondering if this is called a lapel pin or tie pin?

I've seen pins like this before, but never really thought of whether they have a specific purpose.

I'm finding zilch, zero, nada under Modern Language Club, so I thought maybe I need a different search term to at least find similar type pins.

Eek, sorry about the washed out pictures - they're practically blinding.

Can't wait until my new photo-studio-in-a-box (light box) shows up in my mailbox this week. :p

I'm most familiar with these 2-part pins in fraternity and sorority use. (I have both mine and Hubby #1's in my jewelry box.) I *think* the smaller part was called a "guard" and the chain also served as the place to attach "officer" charms.

Now that terminology might be a trick of the memory, so hopefully someone else can confirm or deny. ;)

Washed out? The pictures look fine on my screen, tie.dye.

That makes perfect sense - I couldn't imagine the reasoning behind two separate pins other than to just be fancy. Thanks Bakersgma.

Since this is for a non-fraternal organization, I would just call it a Membership Pin.

They're dirt common, or were. Sometimes you find a gold one, but later ones are gold-filled or just goldtone. Most of them aren't worth a lot.

It all has to do with sentimental value ;)

I think a chatelaine has writing and sewing implements?

Just for the heck of it, I'm gonna put it in an auction.

Thanks everyone for the information - at least I learned something new. :)

The term chatelaine is used for chained pins sometimes too, although the "real" chatelaines are pins with chains and lots of mini random implements of all sorts hanging off of them. Those date to the time before women had purses and pockets.

Susan -- you mean you aren't wearing it?? I had a friend in college who campaigned so hard for hers that she threatened to have it surgically implanted. But, hey -- she's still married to him!

:hilarious: Do they still "get pinned" in college now?

They don't even wear pins. College kids would think getting pinned was a sexual reference.:p:D
