20180124_161535 (1).jpg 20180124_161631 (1).jpg 20180124_161745 (1).jpg Actually got around to some silver cleaning this past weekend. Was working on a set of ice cream bowls, (at least I think that's what they are). Smith is the makers name, if I remember correctly. Noticed that a few were marked differently on the back. (And to be honest, I probably wouldn't have cared, one way or the other, till I joined Antiquers).
Maybe made on different dates and were replacements or additions to the set? Possibly made at at two different sites, that mark them differently?
Any guesses at dates? Thank you for all comments.

The mark is for Frank Smith, a high quality manufacturer in Massachusetts. I believe they were in business from 1886 - 1958. Their molds were later purchased by Towle. Towle made several Frank Smith flatware patterns, marketing them as Frank Smith by Towle. I wouldn't worry too much about the difference in marks on your sherbets--Smith had more than one mark, probably used at different times. I would date the pieces 1940s-1950s when brides registered for these items at jewelry and china shops.

...which makes me wonder if anyone ever used sterling silver ice cream bowls. Other than maybe Mansons and Greg!

Sorry, I got dizzy for a minute staring at all that beautiful, shiny, wonderful sterling silver. That's a beautiful set. You could feed the neighborhood with those!

I use mine! Not often, but at least once a year when I can get the extended family together and again at holidays and birthdays, it's my pleasure to cook a multi-course meal and use all the "good stuff".

    Hi,
My favorites are my White House sterling silver. A woman who worked in the WH for 60 some years since a girl who had to polish the silver. When she retired she was asked what she wanted as a gift. She choose a set of old sterling flatware. The woman died and her family sold the silver. It was auctioned off back in the 1960s. I bought it and have used it many times. Now if I had the china to go with it......:rolleyes::rolleyes:

A set from the second Harrison administration would do nicely. The President wasn't much, but his wife had good taste. Lemonade Lucy Hayes had some pretty pieces too.

    Hi Ruth,
Here is my set. I am not sure of first administration or second of Harrison. I think it was 1893 but I am not positive.

Took about an hour to clean three. Had been awhile. Had to bribe my daughter with pizza to help.
