    Just found this little Bob-Bon Dish for $4,and I think (hope) I deciphered a set of UK hallmarks/assay marks ( terminology AJ ?). Here we go- 'Charles S. Green & Co. Ltd.'/'Birmingham,UK'/'1910', and a separate stamp 'Dingwall'-which I assume stands for Dingwall Scotland ? Why it has that towns name on this piece is anyone's guess.
    PS-Some previous helpful owner yanked off the base plate looking for gold sovereigns or emeralds I suppose (knew you'd wanna see the botched bottom helpful friends !)

    Didn't see this before.:shame::sorry:
    Both are correct, but assay mark is used more nowadays. Probably because the term hallmark has been misused so much.

    Thanks AJ- See the terms misused so much on this and other forums.
    Sounds like a UK crime mystery.

    Dingwall is for Dingwall Jewellers that was based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, later bought out by Birks. They would have ordered the piece from England to be sold at their store in Canada, which is why their name is stamped on the bottom. I believe the business started in the early 1880s. Below is a bit of info on the business

    Yep-YAY CX & YAY UK ! It appears that Dingwall may have been made in Canada & the UK-thanks for the feedback !
    Here's an excerpt from a recent Ebay Listing-
    "Details: This auction is for the gorgeous antique sterling silver jewellery box, made in Birmingham, England in 1921.
    -A little bit of history: The jewelry box had been sold in Winnipeg, Canada in the famous Dingwall family owned store, that specialized exclusively in high end luxury items and jewelry. Donald Ross Dingwall emigrated to Canada in the late 1870s from his native Scotland and opened the store in Winnipeg in the early 1880s. Dingwall Jewellers of Winnipeg were later bought out by Birks.
    The box is marked on the bottom DINGWALL MADE IN ENGLAND (with additional letter D on opposite side) and has a typical set of British hallmarks as following:
    Anchor-City mark, identifying the Assay Office to be in Birmingham, England

    Lion-Silver Standard Mark for STERLING. 925

    W- Birmingham date letter for 1921

    The lid is hallmarked with “Lion” “W”."

    Sorry, my comment above wasn't very clear (I have edited it:))
    Your piece was made in the UK and sold in their store in Canada, the Dingwall stamp was to advertise the store and let people know where it was purchased.
    From the number of Dingwall sterling pieces I've had and seen, I suspect Dingwall ordered large amounts to sell in their store, but I don't know if the Dingwall stamp was done in England or Canada. Birks was another Canadian store that you will see their name stamped on sterling pieces that were made in England.

    Thanks @cxgirl that makes 100% sense. Was wondering if the Dingwalls stamp was the name of a town or style, but it's a store-mystery solved- awesome !
