    Hi,
I know nothing about horse racing so need some help. This is sterling, 1927(?) London by Charles Boyton and son - the date letter is worn and hard to make out but I think it is the letter 'M' for 1927.
Trying to figure out the engraving - I believe the name of the horse is Carinthia with her/his height and weight but no idea what 6 Fur W for I or by Hapsburg - Smear mean.
The trophy is 9 1/2" in height, on wood base is 13 1/4" H, sterling weighs 712g.
    any information appreciated
    thanks for looking

"by Hapsburg (sire) - (from) Smear (dam)"

Not a clue what the W for 1 means. But "Fur" means furlongs, a distance in horseracing.

    You're welcome!

And I agree on the date letter and maker. But how you found Boynton from just the &S I can't imagine! Good going!

I am not sure, but Hapsburg-- Smear may be the stud (father) and mare (mother) and this is their offspring.
Or maybe it is a Stable Name or Owner's Names. That stuff is usually on these trophies but I am not positive what is what. You can try to look up the horse's lineage and race record for more info
I know more about harness racing than the flats so I am not of much help.

You should do well with it, people love to have trophies for show despite the fact that they are not connected to the trophy in any respect.

6 Furlongs is only 3/4mile so it was only a short race.
9s 1Lb is probably the weight of the rider 127 pounds.

Thanks davey! Why would the weight of the rider be put on a trophy?
komokwa, yes, this is a very neat piece, I've not seen one of these before - this isn't mine though so I can't keep it.

All riders are weighed before a race as there are rules about their weight....so it's an important factor.

Here is some info I found when I googled Portsmouth Park in case you haven't found this as yet.

Portsmouth Park, formerly known as Farlington racecourse was the first of two horse racing venues in Portsmouth. The first meeting took place in 1891 and continued until April 1915, at which point the land was taken over by the War Office to be used as an ammunitions dump. It had been a leading National Hunt racing course, served by its own train station.

Portsmouth Park ceased operations more than 100 years ago.

You may have a nice antique on your hands.

That doesn't add up, though. The cup commemorates a race in 1930. I've a feeling W for 1 has something to do with the closing betting odds.

Ah. Wrong Portsmouth Park. Yours is the PAulsgrove one.

thanks pearls and bear! I thought the two were the same at first, the Paulsgrove Portsmouth closed in 1946.
