    Hey peoples!

Um, so I bought this thing at the local flea-market...

It is sterling silver with a weighted/reinforced base.

Now I know it's a vase, but what is the correct name for these things? I've seen bud-vase, specimen vase, and spill vase. Which is correct? I saw a much larger and more ornate one of these at a local auction-house a few months ago and it was advertised as a Victorian sterling-silver spill vase.

I like to call these trumpet vases....but to me the name really makes no vas-differences...;)

I've already tried blowing through it. The sound is awful! It has to be something better than that!

    Size would help.
If about 6-8" tall, I would call it a bud vase. A bud vase is meant to hold a single rose.
A spill vase held sticks for lighting something from an existing fire. A spill vase would most likely not be tapered to such a narrow point.
A trumpet vase is usually taller and wider.
I have no idea what a specimen vase is. However, it is not an elegant name for a sterling vase.

I'd never heard of a specimen vase either. It's what the lady who I bought it from called it.

    It's exactly seven inches high.

I've "heard" bud vases called specimen vases - they hold a single "specimen" of a flower. I actually think the term predates bud vase.

They're often called specimen vases because they're the same shape as those mandated by the RHS for single bloom stalks at flower shows.
