I think this painting is nice
The back of the painting is covered with brown paper

I do not recognize the signature. It's cubist style, but I think painted more recently, could be student art.

Suggest you remove the brown paper to see what may be written on the back. Is this a flat canvas or stretched fabric over a frame? Is it framed? The back is important too, as are photos of the details.

Love the malachite obelisk. Oil on canvas? Artist from a country that uses accents. Malachite + accent makes México a possibility. A still life but it doesn't fit the definition of Cubist (i.e. bringing different view of a subject together in the same picture which results in a painting that appears fragmented.) Here's a landscape by Braque, who along with Picasso invented Cubism, as an example. And, agree with above. The kraft paper backing has to come off. Any frame shop can easily (and inexpensively) replace.

I'd like to know the medium too. Looks like they masked off sections to create straight lined shapes, and to preserve all of those hard edges.

Looks late 80s-early 90s to me.

I'm wondering if instead of an accent, it's a year: '88 '08 or something like that.

on a side note, thinking out loud, (and a dumb question I think ) why would a student (or a young artist) invest time and effort on a large canvas? is it 'normal'

Art students are frequently required to work in large formats. And young artists work in the format that best suits their vision. I don't think yours is a student's work though.

Does not look like student work to me, either.

Yes. I have a similar still life somewhere. There are arches, an oblisk, colors fading into each other, and yes, making large paintings was fun as a student!

I will stick to my "student work" opinion.

It makes it no less, and no more, of a work of art.
