    dear antiqueers
today I would like to enlist your help for this still life painting. I see that it is an oil painting on canvas (canvas?).

on the back is written L brass and something else and 1820

I searched for L bras but couldn't find anything.

do you know who l bras was and where he lived? would he painted this painting in 1820? is it in good condition?

Thanks in advance for viewing and possibly responding. Greetings

It appears to me to be by an amateur painting. The bowl looks poorly shaped as well as the foot of the vase. ovals are hard to get just right. Try holding it up to a mirror and you will see the distortion unless it is just the angle of your photo. I sign my paintings but you will not find me even if you search for the rest of your life.

Does that say "Modernism art" on the back? I'd think little decorative work. 1940s maybe.

The painting itself is 1940s-ish. The little Chinese cloisonné footed bowl could be old/new but it's not helpful for dating.

Looks like Martinusstraat or Martinuspad, a street name. Probably a framer's note. L. Bras who lived in the Martinusstraat could be the person who had it framed.

That's certainly an idea. I wouldn't be surprised though if the painting was sold framed.

I am not offended by Lars but my name is Larkin and I just signed in on Antiquers as Lark. i would be happy to share. You have to understand that for most of my life I had very low self esteem especially when it came to art. I had a very stressful year in my long teaching career and a friend suggested i join her painting group. I started out more like Grandma Moses -very simple. That is the fourth of July family celebration in front of my current 1851 house. Then I took a short drawing class at our senior center from an amazing instructor and that is my pencil sketch of my dog. Watercolor rocks on the California beach, I then tried acrylics - lizards on a barn and my first dry pastels (painted with a paint brush) The tigers. The mirror trick is amazing. i did not like something about my Tigers when I finished them. When I held them up to the mirror , I could see the nose was about 1/16" off. Fixed the problem. The mirror trick will show perspective errors.

Those are very impressive for someone with little formal training. But, of course, you have a good eye naturally. Especially like the red/blue rhythm of the July 4th painting. So Americana.

thanks. It is a fun past time and a great stress reliever. Not that I have much stress out here on the farm and retired! The new dog has added a little stress.
