I'd love to get anyone's thoughts on this 1975 painting.

I found info on the canvas, on page 15 of this website: https://www.npg.org.uk/assets/files/pdf/research/artists_materials_10_Winsor.pdf

...But the name I can't track down, and would appreciate any help.

The name Neufeld seems German, and the painting seems signed Dubai. Huh?

Is that first initial an 'L' or is it 'Le' ?

Measures 12" x 18", not counting the frame. Found in a thrust shop in Portland, Oregon.

Does look like "Dubai." Could be the work of an expat wife.

And am I crazy or does it seem like the greener apples are arrayed defensively--even antagonistically--against the threatening knife?

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Fruit "escaping" the container is a standard still life composition. The knife is the line guiding the eye to the focal point.

I wish the artist had shifted the whole thing over to the right instead of leaving that negative space, but the apples are very nicely painted.

i like that touch of white on the apples, that from further back gives them a real glisten

Cool apples but the knife looks like amateur hour to me.

i know what your saying, there something (very)slightly off in the shape, or angle, but think its more of a bowie shape blade

More a clip point, isn't it? Less pronounced?

A nice little detail and one that makes the blade more interesting. Class must have had a lesson on Cézanne that day. Only wish the horizon line were a bit straighter.

I'd call the knife "mid-century paring".(LOL) It's what I use to peel apples or close enough.

I hadn't noticed that! Thanks for the observation. Sharp eye, as always.
