I agree with the labradorite, but FYI my first thought was boulder opal, which I like very much. Took a picture of a big one at a gem & mineral show. Pricey.

Good! I have a few. I use some as bookends.:shame: In my defense, that is what they were sold as in Oz, way back when. I will go hide now.:bag:

Blue John is a type of fluorite, so more transparent than this stone.

As others have said, labradorite. An amusing fact about labradorite is that the iridescence seen is not technically iridescence at all, but more properly is called "labradoresence," and is pretty much unique to that stone. The way that the light bounces around inside to produce the effect is different than in iridescent materials. I've got a big chunk of it around somewhere.
It is somewhat prone to shattering when used as jewelry, however, and is a bit softer than agate, and so is fairly easily scratched.

Just throwing this in for the heck of it. Labradorite, like opal, is sometimes used for cameos, despite the fragility of the stone. Not mine, sad to say:

All I've got to show are some slightly boring green beads but when they catch the light right you can see it bouncing around inside the beads as AF said. FullSizeRender.jpg FullSizeRender.jpg
