    Hello,

This is first painting I have bought, and I kinda like it, think it is surrealism.
What I like most about it are colors, sky, composition.

There is no frame or signature on it.

Dimensions of the painting are 44x35 cm, I believe it is oil on canvas, and canvas is "stretched" over piece of board.

Any thoughts about this painting, dose anyone have any idea who might be the artist, approximate time when it was made, do you think it is some established painter or an amateur, would it be considered "quality" artwork, or not really?

Basically, any thoughts or comments would be helpful and appreciated!

    Welcome to antiquers.

I would say surrealism too. It's certainly interesting, but the anatomy of the human forms is a little awkward.

People can always tell you more if you include a photo of the back.

    Hello, thank you very much!

I would agree about anatomy of bodies, but maybe sometimes it's supposed to be not perfect, or it is just painter not being skilled enough?

I will take photo of back of painting soon, when I get back home, but it is just a piece of board, no frame or any inscription.

    Best regards!

Yes, Surrealism as above. Here's more information on the art movement. A photograph of the back would be helpful. And please tell us where you got it and what you were told about it.

I like it. That armless guy in the middle is very unsettling to me for some reason - and I don't ever get unsettled by paintings. I think it's his face that bothers me.

When canvas is mounted to a board it's just called "canvas board".

This piece is surrealist and student work. The stilted brush strokes, basic color mixing, over wrought awkward anatomy, and classical student practices like plaster casts and fabric drape are some of the reasons.

You may be thinking of Leonora Carrington.

    Hello Debora,

    Thank you for reply!

I'm sending back of painting down in this comment.
I have bought painting at flea market in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
I have bought it from reseller, he bought it same day from some other person, so he didn't know much himself, and couldn't tell me much about it.
I went to some local gallery that is specialized for Bosnian paintings, and they couldn't associate it with any known Bosnian painter.
So it could be from any other country, or just student work.

Well, it's a very interesting first choice if your intention is to start a collection. I would think post-World War II but that said... I'm not sure how well Surrealism was tolerated in Socialist Yugoslavia. (I suspect not well.)
Agree that doesn't appear to be the work of a fully-formed artist. Also, that canvas looks homemade and not the product of a more prosperous European nation.
