Table Finial Design Question

    The center bottom of this table's finial has that cup/dish shape. Not sure if it was designed that way or if it's missing anything? My wife is jokingly suggest she wants to place a clear glass globe on top.

    It is as made. Occasionally see these. Always thought it was for a plant but have no independent verification for this.
