Featured Terracotta Fisherman

This fine 26cm tall terracotta fisherman turned up at auction yesterday. It is clearly signed Palermo with another word Damen?

I found the same signature online and the seller said it was also signed Vaccarro (although no photo of the full signature)

I’ve run out of ideas for more searches. Any thoughts ?

 

I see Daneu. Does appear to be a name found in Palermo.

Brilliant. Thank you. So there is a good chance that this is a piece made for Daneu. I did try that name but along with terracotta it brought up nothing. You’ve solved it for me.

Yes that’s the one I found. Seems to be signed by the same hand but that one is supposed to have the Vaccaro signature although it’s not included in the photos. I’m reall grateful for your input

 

Delighted to finally be of help. Vaccaro's dates are 1847-1931 and he was from Caltagirone. There's a ceramic museum there in which his works are represented.

Here's a rough translation of the description that accompanied the piece below.

"Cav. Giacomo Vaccaro (1847 - 1931) Caltagirone ceramic group
Giacomo Vaccaro of the famous workshop, Bongiovanni - Vaccaro, awarded with a gold medal at an international exhibition in New York that earned him the title of knight, was one of the most important Sicilian ceramists, his works are present at the ceramics museum of Caltagirone and in private collections. In good condition, with a slight streak on the front foot of the donkey, as shown in the photos."

Fishermen are not an uncommon subject coming out of the Bongiovanni workshop. Yours is quite a nice example.
