Picked up this nice sized vase at the thrift last week for only $3.00. :D Size is 5" tall x 7" diameter. I am finding little black on black pottery from Tesuque. I am also not able to attribute this to a partiular potter. It is signed with surname Padilla. I am not able to make out the first name. Any ideas? Approximate age?

    Maybe Eusefina

    Wait....maybe Eusebio like @Debora said.
There was a Saint Eusebia.......and all the residents of that Pueblo were/are Catholic, so Eusebio makes sense.
    Made maybe 1940s or earlier?

Saw the one on eBay. Never would have thought of Eusebia but that looks right. I do think ending in a, rather than o.

I find a Eusibia Padilla in the 1940 census for Tesuque. Born about 1906. Wonder if this is a misspelling.

If it's the one I saw, from Ancestry, it says his race is White, which would be incorrect if he was from Tesuque Pueblo. And the address in Bernalillo County is too far from Tesuque Pueblo.
I think it's the wrong person.

Not if he was "mixed" and it was more socially and economically advantageous to "pass".

Tesuque Pueblo is about 70 miles north from that address in Albuquerque.
San Jose is the neighborhood, Albuquerque is the City and Bernalillo is the county. I actually drive near that address on a weekly basis!
It just doesn't seem like the right person. The potter would've lived on the Pueblo to sign it that way.

To make it more complicated, the Spanish missionaries re-named the residents of all the Pueblos, and gave them Spanish names. So it's hard to know on paper who is Hispanic and who is Native. But that's a sad story for another day.

Just because he was in San Jose in 1940 doesn't mean he stayed there the rest of his life. I don't know how the census was conducted then, but if the info is self reported as it is now &, as evelyb said, it is more advantageous to be considered white...

That is not the census listing I saw. It was spelled Eusibia and he was listed as Indian. Residence was Santa Fe, Tesuque. The birth date and age were the same. I am on my phone now so can't search and link right now. Will look in the morning when on the desktop.

Looks like EusEbia to me. And I'm inclined to think that Eusebia was a she, as was far more common for Pueblo potters.

I love that classic olla shape. Nice pot!

Yes, paintings and pottery are easy to come by at the thrift/estate sales. And of course, Native jewelry is everywhere. But the good quality items are snapped up quickly.
