The Decameron...Leather Binding Help..Info??

    I have seen several copies of this book...It is the 1950`s Medici Classic...650 illustrations....I have never seen this leather binding??..M.H.O....Is the only marking.

    I really am not an expert, but I wonder whether a former owner had it rebound and included his/her initials at the bottom of the spine? Just a first thought...

    I'd say it is possibly an amateur job in a pseudo medieaval style which does not in any way resemble an early binding.

    What does the title page look like? Is there a publication date?

    Oops! You already said 1950s and Medici Classic. I think you'll find that The Medici Society produced books like this: classic titles in leather bindings.

    There used to be a bookbinder on the Cape who did custom binding, so I'd agree with AF - done for a private library

    Sometimes discoloration or lack thereof on the endpapers are a sign of rebinding.
