Always thought this was a lid, had it for ages, just making sure that is what it is xx
It's approx 4 cms ( one and a half inches I think approx)
    (it's not a frame,is it?)
I think someone's made the insert by gluing something together

My guess is that it is a sterling collar for a perfume, or vanity jar. Glass got broken and someone made a backing to use it as a picture frame.

Again that is only my GUESS

Interesting, gives me something to look for, thank you...it has a sort of nub at the top where something looks to have broken off.
(Don't think it's sterling, have polished and it's gold and brass in colour )
Thank you, off to look x x

Ok they also did silver plated vanity sets.
Sterling was usually applied only to cut glass.
Silver plate was used with pressed glass.

You know the velvet has been nibbling at me. Is it in the shape of a half dome? Does it feel like sawdust is in it?

Might be a broken pin cushion.
Saw this on the stick pin page I was looking at for another thread.
This is a new one from China. I bet this is a copy of an antique one.

    Another interesting idae! Thank you!

The insert is totally flat no *give*... I'll try and take better pics today, but so far it's dark here. It could be a replacement? The insert is completely flat, like flat things glued together

Maybe it was plated and the plate's come off as well ?

Thanks again...it's not very well made, no pattern, crude solder inside. The metal though is interesting, ( to me ) it's two colours top and bottom,
Hope the sun eventually makes a bit of an appearance xx

(It's definitely not velvet, it's almost plasticy? Not plastic though I don't think)

Not sure how much better these pics are...it's interesting to me because it's two different colours.

    Might be copper and brass.
You could wash it with some Dawn liquid dishwasher and a drop of ammonia. Or use a little silver polish if you wanted to take some of the tarnish off. Or just leave it alone.

The material is definitely old as in around 1900.
You're right it's not velvet. It's like a wool velvet, or wool corduroy.
Need a textile person to look at it.
    Don't know fabrics. Sorry

(Don't think we have Dawn here, is that like fairy liquid? ) x x x...there is no corrosion now anyway. It's lovely and shiny...very pretty now actually, I love the colours. I cannot get a pic of it shining away...there is nothing on it now that shouldn't be. The stuff inside is solder...thank you so much for your help x x x xxx

I don't know why, but I snapped this up when I first saw it.. ( was only 10p though) and when I got it home, I thought WTH did I waste 10p on a lid for? Hehehe...at least now it's pretty :D
