THIS is gorgeous and I love her. The lady collects buckles and was selling her surplus. Lots of yummies but she had prices set fairly (how dare she) which is high for my car boot budget! :hilarious: She let me have this one for 5 euros though after I said I'd think about it.

Its marked for 800 silver, and being a shoe buckle I'd like to put it not far after the introduction of the boars head (1838). Upon very close inspection I think I see black dot, which I've tried to photograph the most obvious ones, but because of the sparkle I can't get it very clear. I tried to get the sparkle on camera but its also a difficult task!

I need to look up in my book which stone cut this is, and also are the rings on the sides later additions or were they used with a small chain to fix it into place on the shoe?

I decided upon this one in particular because of those rings, I'd like to find a sturdy chain and attached two clasps onto it to use as a bracelet. Its not overly large or heavy, so I think this will work! Or I'll convert it into a hair piece.

Hm. I’m not seeing black dot, but it can be a mare to photograph. Can you see an actual distinct black dot on the culet?

    Amazing find!
Close enough to Georgian for me! :cat:
I have been eyeing a similar one for some months now.
Its price is a bit rich for my budget though.
For 5€ I would have grabbed this one as fast as the lightning.
    So, good catch! :)

I think I can, but not on all of them, and its tiny if its there. Like teeny tiny.
I tried to get another pic, maybe this is better? Its taken at an angle.

Quite! The more I see of georgian pieces the more its becoming my favorite. I can't get over how lovely it feels in the hand. I hope I see the seller again cause I'd love a second look at a couple more she had. There was one I nearly got that was 100% black dot, but it was a little damaged and some of the big stones were blurred over, almost like when glass is fogged up but on the outside. Quite proud of myself for going for condition rather than just shiny! I'd like to see it again though...:hilarious:

So the 'black dot' is what can be seen through the table as a tattle-tale for the presence of a culet?
A first for me, an' Thank You!

I dont really see the black dots in these stones...normally they are big and very easy to spot.
it wouldn't bother me if I were you
    Its a nice piece anyhow.

Yep, I bought it with that opinion so its no biggie if it stays that way! Its different to my other georgian piece, that has large ones and many in a small circle on some of them.

Just checked my book. The cuts are scissor cuts? If they were real stones lol

It is gorgeous, and excellent quality.
I'm not seeing black dot either, nor would I expect it. Given the mark and the style of the pastes, this was made after the heyday of black dot paste.

If 18th century pastes have black dots, they are clearly visible when you have the piece in hand. You shouldn't have to search for them.
And although black dots are a sign of quality, a lack of black dots is not a sign of lack of quality.

Well put! I'm happy with it either way. It's a gorgeous thing! Stood out as soon as she handed it to me.

Never had a clue how fascinating Georgian jewelry was.During the Napoleonic Wars a type of jewelry made out of lacquered iron (Berlin Iron) became patriotic & fashionable-interestingly crafted stuff.

Yes I can very quickly see myself saving my big cash for these types of things. I don't even love bling that much! But its shiny in such a special way....

It’s not black dot. As aj says, the dots are clear and distinct, and I don’t see them on that close up. The idea was to draw the eye into the stone and give it depth.

    Lovely thing, anyhow.

on the cut steel thing, it was also at one time a more expensive material.

One could do a long Doctoral Thesis on Georgian Jewelry, just as on any artistic movement.
There's some amazing stuff online-much marked Georgian though is $$$$$$$.

Isn't it just :arghh: And you can forget about earrings (my preferred jewel), I don't see any genuinely antique ones for under 70, and the nice longer ones aren't under 300 (more like 500+). And that's just Victorian! Georgian is well nigh or above 1k I've seen.
