Featured Thought it was a Chinese umbrella stand, maybe table?

Found this at my friend's thrift store today, and at firt I thought it was a Chinese umbrella stand & a friend thought it was a brass garbage can.
But when I did a image search it came back as a N African table!
Looking at it closer, it looks like theres a line of skinny elephants along the bottom so maybe so - but what do the unusual lines around the middle mean - they remind me of something Celtics?
And in the middle of the top it looks like a Jewish star of David?
Finally, it's tarnished inside it; how do I clean it or should I leave it as it is?
Any info on it would be greatly appreciated!
PS - first photos I took thinking it was a umbrella stand (if it's a table, it's awful small?)

I think it's great Journey, whatever it is-it's a nice piece.Depending on the price,I would've probably picked it up and figured out how to integrate the Indian/Moroccan motif later.
PS-Someone here should be able to ID & date it.

It is Egyptian, with that sphynx.
Stars are important design elements in Islamic art, and seen throughout the Islamic world. It could also be the star of Salomon, which is either a hexagram or a pentagram.

Not exactly like yours, but I did find this one

    "Hexagonal dinner stand"
At the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo
    That one's:
Height 81 cm, diameter 40.5 cm

    They mention:
"How date and origin were established:
This piece can be dated based on the inscription it carries, which includes the name of the craftsman who made it and the date it was manufactured."
So now you'll need to translate the texts on yours to see if that also gives you info on the origin/date/maker.
